Welcome back to Terrible Two Some Tuesday, where two sisters tell you a haunted story and every tale comes with a side of family drama. I'm Ashley. I'm Simone. And today's episode is the La La Rie Mansion in New Orleans. So let's get right into it because we do have a little tiny bit of history to cover so that we all know who she is and what kind of person she was. Again, like I said, this is set in New Orleans, so very haunted house, very voodoo, very spiritual, all that kind of thing. So to give a little background about one of America's most haunted houses, let's talk a little bit about Madame Delphine La Lerie. Let's. Now, this woman was a monster and probably America's first female serial killer.

Oh yeah. She was amazing in uh that show. American Horror Story. Also Jessica Lang. Oh my god, I know. Give it up. She was amazing in the third season. The third season is the best season. But anyway, let's get to it. Okay, Jesus. Madame Lallerie was a wealthy white socialite who was infamous for the cruel treatment of her enslaved people. On behalf of white people, we suck. Yes. She was married three times. Her first husband, inconsequential. We don't need to talk about him. Her second husband was a businessman who also dabbled in slave trading and smuggling. And when he died, she inherited his enslaved people. And then I think she also inherited her parents at some time as well.

This is a good fact to know. I once read this book, I believe it was called The American Slave Coast. And it was all it was it was basically all about how the economy worked back then. Um and so obviously it started out where you had all this land and you needed enslaved people to work the land. Enslaved people became so valuable that they were worth more than any kind of currency, including paper and coin. So it became you had enslaved people and now you needed land because they were so valuable. Because you could also like rent them out for the day, which is awful. But like you could rent them and you could um like share them, share with your number or whatever.

So for her to have that many, uh pr probably made her very rich, especially after Jefferson stopped the importation of enslaved people because it just increased the value uh because you weren't shipping anymore in. So that gives you like a I think that's important to know that that's a lot of her wealth is off enslaved people. Right.

Um, because they were so Which also tells you what kind of a person she was. Right. So after her second husband dies, she remarries at some point, but she had also basically set herself up pretty well off of her second husband's death.

That's suspicious. She Yeah. Okay. In 1831, she bought this property in New Orleans and she kept it in her name without any involvement from her husband. He didn't actually live in the house with her. Like it was kind of a marriage of convenience. They didn't even like each other. So he didn't live there with her. It was just her and her enslaved people and um her three daughters. I think she had three daughters.

Yeah. Um, but you know, I get it. Okay, so this is the house that she built the two-story. This was the property that she built the two-story mansion on, and it had an attached slave quarters. She was able to maintain her socialite position even through all of the rumors of her treatment of them. But when her mansion caught fire just three years after she had it built, the townspeople forced they forced their way in to help evacuate people. They found seven slaves in her attic who were bound and showed evidence of cruelty and abuse. That's so fucked up. They were mutilated and suspended by their necks, and their limbs had been severely stretched and torn. What the fuck? So, in this three-year time period where she lived in the mansion, there were 12 funeral registers for the deaths of enslaved people from her mansion. Jesus Christ. Three years. Five of those deaths, right? Five of those deaths were a cook and her four children.

So one neighbor has stated that she saw an eight-year-old girl fall from the roof and die while running away from Lollie. So apparently, LaLaorie had become angry when the young girl was brushing her hair out and hit a snag. So she like chased her up the stairs, up onto the roof, screaming and yelling at her, and the little girl fell from the roof and died. It just makes me sad. Yeah, for sure. At this point, the Laurries were investigated and found guilty of illegal cruelties and were forced to forfeit nine of their enslaved people. They were then brought back to the Lawleries through a relative. So the relative ended up buying them and bringing them right back. Like imagine they get out of this hellhole and then that you're just brought right back in. It reminds me of uh House of a Thousand Corpses, if you haven't seen that movie.

Oh, yeah. That one too. Laulerie also apparently kept her cook chained to the stove. So when the fire happened, the fire marshals and police found her 70-year-old cook chained to the stove still.

Um the cook said she set the fire trying to commit suicide, stating that slaves who were punished and taken to the uppermost room never came back.

So one author, um, Jean Delavine, wrote, Male slaves, stark naked, chained to the wall, their eyes gouged out, their fingernails pulled off by the roots, others had their joints skinned and festering. What the great holes in their buttocks where the flesh had been sliced away, their ears hanging by shreds, their lips sewn together. Although this author didn't cite any sources for those claims, that's what she said she heard from the peop the townspeople that went in to get people out of the mansion.

Another story circulated and claimed that the enslaved people were emaciated, looking like they had been whipped and had on spiked collars that kept them from moving their heads. You chose a real fucked-up story. Our nation's past is not all rainbows and butterflies. Most of them are. And I need you to understand, like, how horrible this woman was while we before we get into the ghost part.

This is going, we're going right back into some gruesome shit. Okay. Another slave was said to have had a hole drilled into his head with a wooden spoon sticking out. An obvious attempt to stir the brains of this man.

Allegedly, a different person had their skin peeled back to expose the tissue and muscle to the naked eye. The story also claims that another slave had his intestines removed from his body and wrapped around his naked waist.

Yeah. Others, covered with honey and black ants, lived in torture. Most of these accounts were unfounded, but one author claimed they came from old newspaper stories, interviews, and neighborhood hearsay.

Yes. So the original mansion was demolished by the townspeople directly after the fire, but was rebuilt in 1838. That mansion has served as a high school, a music conservatory, an apartment building, a bar, and a furniture store, but is now a private residence.

No, she fled the country. Well, yeah. So when they were rebuilding the Lawlerie Mansion, which is just a mansion now because she's gone, they uncovered numerous human skeletons beneath the house in quote unquote all sorts of positions. Helter skelter, barely covered with soil, shreds of fabric still adhering to their bones. Some of the skulls had holes in them. What's helter skelter? I thought it was suicide, but I could be totally wrong. So you look that up.

It's said that the property is cursed and that there are several spirits within the residence. And there are stories of screams coming from the house, flashing lights and windows, and Madame Laurie's perfume can be smelled.

Some say they have smelled decaying fit flesh, and others have said they've experienced the feeling of hands strangling them. People have often heard moaning coming from the room that was once the slave quarters. They've also said to hear footsteps through the house on the reg, too. On the reg?

But Maureen, she got to go on the ghost tour that went past.

He stayed on the opposite side of the street. I would hate that. And he told people, You were more than welcome to go over there. I'm not going to. I've had people call me after they've gone home from vacation and tell me that something followed them from the house.

Like any old number of spirits in New Orleans could have attached themselves to that couple and followed them home.

You could just feel especially I was there post-Katrina. Yeah. Um, I was there in t 2014. Katrina happened in like 2005, and even all those years later, the city was still recovering. Yeah. Um, so I would agree with you that it could have been any fucking spirit.

Aside from people claiming that something followed them home after visiting the outside of this house, some have also claimed that doors slam, furniture moves, and apparitions in chains have been sighted walking around the property. So supposedly, since 1834, no one has lived in the house for more than five consecutive years. I don't know about the current owner, but prior to the current owner, nobody had lived there for more than five consecutive years. There's also a small female spirit called Leah, and it's speculated that she is the spirit of the young slave girl who fell off the roof as Lollary chased her with a whip. Just fuck this lady. Right. Um, Leah was later buried on the property, so like it's no wonder that she might still be there.

For sure. So rumor has it there is also a curse that affects anyone who owns the house, causing bad luck. Most recently, Nicolas Cage owned the house, and he suffered a ton of financial loss and career troubles. I don't know about you, but I don't feel like his career suffered that much. But um, supposedly he was affected by this curse. Um, also, I think he lost the house to foreclosure. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

It's assumed that most of the paranormal comes from the enslaved people who were killed or at least died in the house under Madame La Lerie. But that's not all. Okay. In 1894, after the house was turned into apartments, a tenant was brutally murdered and his room was ransacked. Nothing of value was taken, but the police still deemed it a robbery. Neighbors told police that this tenant was having problems with spirits in the house, and also claimed there was a demon in the house who wouldn't rest until the tenant had died. How do they know that? Well, that's what this gentleman told his neighbor.

So during the mid to late 19th century, the house was used as a co-ed school before being turned into an all-girl African-American primary school. I just So one night a woman who was taking a ghost tour and claimed to be a medium had sensed things on the tour before the guide had even started talking about the locations. As soon as they got to the Lollary mansion, she sucked in a deep breath, said such sadness, and began rocking back and forth on her heels. So she then took a picture of the house and said, That bricked up window, that's not where the little girl fell out of. Oh. So she obviously sensed that that little girl's spirit and knew that she had fallen to her death off of the roof. They didn't she didn't say where. She just said that's not where she fell.

In the next few minutes, after the medium had pointed out that window, she said that she sensed the spirit of a young boy who liked to play pranks on the living and the spirit of a young girl who felt nervous. She also claimed that La Lorie's victims were no longer visiting the house. I'm not sure what this will like she somehow knew that that wasn't the window that Leah fell out of, but she's saying the victims are no longer at the house, so I don't know which to believe. Yeah. That's weird. So on another tour, a guide was giving a ghost tour, and the group was directly across from the front door of the mansion. The tour guide felt a tug on her messenger bag, but when she turned around, no one was there. She felt it again, but harder, and again, no one was there. Sometime after this, the same tour guide was with another group under a set of street lamps that had been burnt out for weeks. She started telling the story of Leah, the little girl who fell off the roof, and as soon as she mentioned the name, the lamps came on. When she said the name again, they went out again.

Later that day, she was on the second floor, and from the third floor, she heard a young girl scream and a woman chasing her yelling, get in here. Fuck that. Yeah.

So again, she stupidly goes to the other housekeeper and tells her about this experience, and she the other housekeeper said, You never hear anything, okay? She ran out as quickly as she could and never came back.

I guess if you're somebody who doesn't believe, then go for it. But to me, I feel like I definitely would be haunted by this all the time. I think I would just feel nauseated.

So supposedly, I just read this. People who have been on the ride when it like broke down with him in the middle of it and like all the lights went out and all this stuff, they've actually seen like real ghosts on the on the ride. Oh. Yeah. Because people spread the ashes of their loved ones there, even though you're not supposed to. Um, which also cracks me up because like not I don't think a lot of people know this, but Disney actually like they spend a shitload of money on dust and they remove the dust from the haunted mansion and put new dust in the haunted mansion. So if you spread your loved ones' ashes there, they're gonna get rid of it and put new dust in there.

We're gonna start one. Um, I think I would just like ride all the rides as many times as I wanted to, and I would freak people out, and I would definitely like sit next to people and like just bug them and like, you know, mess with their hair or something just to be like, something's getting you. Yeah. I would go into the Matterhorn and fuck that Yeti up. I would go up to the Matterhorn and I would go up to the basketball court that's at the top of it.

Yeah. Um, I it took me years before I would go on that ride because of the monster dude. What was it? So when I finally did, yeah, mom would be like, he's coming up, he's coming up, yeah, and warn me. And he was not nearly as scary as I thought he was gonna be. I do remember that. And then the other ride that I wouldn't ride was the like whale ride where you go into the whale's mouth and then you and then they have like the little miniature towns of all of the Disney characters. Yeah. Um, I was terrified. I thought for sure you were going in that whale's mouth and you were never coming out. I don't think I ever rode that ride. Oh, once I did ride it, I loved it because I love miniatures and it's literally little miniature replicas of every of like every little town. Yeah. Um, but I loved it after that. But yeah, it took mom and dad years to get me to ride that ride. Hot tip. You should bring someone who needs a wheelchair to Disneyland. That's so messed up. You're just ruining it for everybody else that has to actually be in a wheelchair. Well, no, don't bring a fake wheelchair person.

Oh, so you just want to use somebody. No, just spend time with them. Christ. My father-in-law has Parkinson's, and so he doesn't he could walk, but he couldn't walk very well, so he had a scooter. We didn't wait in one goddamn line.
