A family moves into a house where six people were murdered a year prior. It's not long at all before the family realizes that a pig isn't a good houseguest and demons require a lot of attention. Listen to the story of one of the most famous hauntings in America and come to the same realization we did: demons really emanate Leo energy.

It's terrible to some Tuesday where two sisters tell you a haunted story and every tale comes at the side of family drama. I'm Ashley. I'm Simone, and today's episode is the Amityville Horror House. Welcome to the first episode of Terrible Tucsome Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, welcome. Are you so excited? I'm super excited.
SPEAKER_00I'm mostly excited to just hang out with you.
SPEAKER_01I think that's what I'm most excited for, too. It's an excuse to like hang out without anybody else. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Not that we really have any other.
SPEAKER_01We're talking about your husband and your kids.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah. All right. Yeah, you got me there. Uh so we're not gonna talk too much. We're gonna basically jump into it. First, I just want to ask Ashley, what is your relationship with the paranormal?
SPEAKER_01Uh I've had quite a few experiences with the paranormal. We'll actually get into um some of them on an episode here in the future, but I think the paranormal and kind of things that I've experienced and that my family has experienced, it goes back a long way. I think um our grandma was really sensitive and I think she kind of passed that down to all of us girls.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. There's like a w all the women in our family have some sort of like medium ability. Right. Um, so I believe in ghosts. I don't I think a healthy amount of skepticism is good. Um you shouldn't you should try to explain things with like science and logic before you jump to conclusions. Uh but yeah, I have experienced things that I can't explain or that science can't explain. And I think there's an afterlife. I think our dead mom hangs out sometimes, and our dead grandma, and our dead uncle, and our dead grandpa, everyone's dead. Um and I think that, you know, you I believe in reincarnation and that souls come back to evolve and learn.
SPEAKER_01And see, reincarnation to me is like my own personal version of hell. Like I've already done my time on earth. I'd like to go to heaven now. I don't want to like keep doing this over and over and over again.
SPEAKER_00I know, but I have bad news for you because I just feel like you're a young soul.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm I'm I'm done after this. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00That's like when skinny people go to the gym and I'm and it's like, you're done. You don't need to be here. Yeah. Um, no, I get that. So we'll jump in. Are you excited here? I am at the Amityville House.
SPEAKER_01Um don't know a lot about the actual hauntings of the Amityville house. I know like some of the history before the hauntings happened.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01So I'm excited to get into it and see what it all entails.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm interested in your opinion at the end. All right. So on the early morning of November 13th, 1974, in Amityville, New York, a twenty-four twenty-four-year-old man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. ran to a local bar in hysterics and told the bartender that someone had shot his mother and father. Someone in the bar called local police, and when they arrived at the house, they what they saw would haunt them. Inside, six victims lay murdered in their beds, each one of them lying on their stomachs with their heads resting on their arms. That's an important fact to remember later. The victims were 43-year-old Ronald DeFeo senior, 43-year-old Luis DeFeo, 18-year-old Don, 13-year-old Allison, 12-year-old Mark, and 9-year-old John, which is a shit ton of kids. I only have two, and that's too many.
SPEAKER_01How many kids was that? I didn't count.
SPEAKER_00Four, five. Four. Not including Ronald. So I guess I had five. Each had been shot with a high-powered rifle. At first, the investigators theorized that the DeFeos had been a mob hit since it was rumored that Ronald Sr. had ties to the Genevieve crime family. Uh it this theory was plausible because all the six victims being killed without a struggle and there were no witnesses. And obviously, like the mob's very good at murdering people.
SPEAKER_01But like what were his mob ties? Like, does anybody know? I didn't look into it. Oh, okay. I'm sorry. Well, I won't ask you questions about that then.
SPEAKER_00You okay. However, once the police interviewed Ronald Jr., it was pretty clear that their son and brother had committed committed the murders. Uh Ronald told police that he was in the basement of the home when a cloaked figure showed up and gave him the rifle and told him to kill his family. Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01So he just like straight up admitted that he killed them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, his story changes multiple times. Um like sometimes he blames it on the paranormal, sometimes he doesn't, sometimes he doesn't take accountability at all. So it's kinda I haven't deep dived into the true crime of this because it's not a true crime podcast, so I don't know all the details, but at one point he did say uh that some sort of paranormal creature showed up and gave him the right. Okay. He also told police and later the jury that the demon had followed him from room to room while committing the murders. Um again, he changed his story multiple times, and not every version is paranormal. But when he went to trial, his attorney, William Weber, was trying to prove that a force beyond Ronald's control was responsible for the murders. He claimed that some houses could be built with certain electrical currents, and if that was ruled out, the case would be brought to Duke University to begin researching a paranormal reason. Um that never panned out.
SPEAKER_01Uh that seems kind of far-fetched. Yeah. Especially to bring up to a jury. Like, it's hard to convince one person of that, and now you're gonna try to convince 12 people of that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, for sure. And I would really want to see what that jury selection looks like. Like, do you believe in demons? Um He tried to claim insanity, but nothing ever came of the current theory and the paranormal research. So he was found guilty of six murders and he was sentenced to life in prison. I think you're sentenced to multiple uh life sentences. Investigators theorize that his motive was a $200,000 life insurance policy, but Ronald actually never gave a reason for why he did what he did besides that um the devil. Well, do you know if there was a life insurance policy?
SPEAKER_01Um, I believe so. I don't know. Again, I didn't like deep dive into the true crime. I mean, that's that's kind of far-fetched again, because like why would he be the beneficiary you'd think his mom would be the beneficiary of that?
SPEAKER_00It probably depends what state you're in.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I don't know. Okay. Now we're getting into l legalities and I don't know. Okay. I don't even know what state we're in right now.
SPEAKER_00We're in New York. Oh, okay. Amineyville, New York. Oh, yeah, thank you. It's a small town about an hour outside of Manhattan. It's known for its affluent residents, good schools, and safe surroundings. It's exactly what attracted the Lutz family to the area. And on December 18th, 1975, they moved in to 112 Ocean Avenue for 28 days. See, I thought they lived there for years. No, they stayed for 28 days.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't realize that they were only there for less than a month.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay. Uh, this all happens really fast. It's like every single day there's something crazy happening. Uh, George Letz was twenty-eight and owned a land surveying company, so this was useful when looking for a house uh since he knew property values pretty well. George and his new wife Kathy had a budget of thirty to fifty thousand dollars. To buy the house. To buy the house, yes. And two conditions. The house had to be on water.
SPEAKER_01See, that's always bad for a haunted.
SPEAKER_00He was working from home before working from home was a thing. Uh when Trans Center. Yeah. When George reached out to the Conklin Realty Office, broker Edith Evans told George she had a place she thought the couple might be interested in. On 112 Ocean Avenue, dark shingles and white trims stood bordered by evergreens. A sign at the end of the driveway read, High Hopes. The three-story six-bedroom Dutch Colonial was listed for $80,000, which is $486,000 today. So even that's a little steal. That's a steal. I almost paid that for my house, it's $1,100 square feet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's I like uh I'll buy that house now. But we're moving to New York.
SPEAKER_00The price did make George nervous. He thought either the house was a shit show or it needed a ton and it needed a ton of work, or the price in the ad was a typo. Uh they went to see it anyway. George noticed the bushes on the side of the house. He noticed through the bushes on the side of the house that all the blinds in the windows of the neighbors' houses that faced 112 were closed, but all the other blinds facing the street were open, which is a super weird thing to notice. I would never notice that. No. The broker was like, Oh hey, by the way, this is the DeFeo house. And George was like, what else?
SPEAKER_01Wait, remind me how what's the time difference between the DeFeos living there and George buying it?
SPEAKER_00November 1974 was the murders, and they bought it in December.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so like 75. So like a year later. Okay, a year later. Well, it's just still not a lot of time.
SPEAKER_00No. George actually said that he just didn't have time to think about it. Uh, because Kathy fell in love with it right away and had to have it. So even though it was out of their price range and it was by the river, call 911. Yeah. Uh George was trying to configure the basement to be his new work from home space for his surveying company, and he just like figured out a way to afford it, which must be nice. Kathy had three kids from a previous marriage. Christopher, who was seven, Daniel, who was nine, and Melissa, who they called Missy, was five, which is I hate that. I hate that nickname. As far as anyone knew, George and the kids got along fine. Uh, but they didn't really know each other that well. They hadn't been married for very long. Listen to this. This is fucking crazy. George bought the DeFeo's dining room furniture, all the bed frames, and the girl bedroom set for four hundred dollars. To which I say, Duh.
SPEAKER_01So he bought the furniture where the people were killed. Yes. What were they sleeping on before?
SPEAKER_00Uh that's a really good question. He also had their washer, dryer, fridge, and freezer.
SPEAKER_01Okay, taking over a dead family's house is one thing, but taking over all their furniture, and it wasn't like they died of natural causes. Like these were traumatic, awful deaths, and they take he's just gonna use all their furniture and their appliances. Yeah. I mean, the washer and dryer, okay.
SPEAKER_00No. Oh, okay. This is why I don't go to thrift stores. Who was murdered in that shirt?
SPEAKER_01Well, I think there would be evidence of a murder in a shirt.
SPEAKER_00They could have been poisoned. Um suffocated. Someone someone could have died in that shirt. When we were getting rid of mom's clothes after she died, I was like, these are dead people's clothes. Yeah, it was kind of weird. Yeah. The first three of their 28 days, George had stopped showering and shaving, and he just started to become really angry and mean to the kids, uh, sometimes resorting to corporal punishment for minor offenses. Like one point him and Kathy beat the kids with spoons. They both did? Yeah. Uh, for something to do with like a window. It was a very like negligent, like it was it was very minor. Uh he began to wake up every morning at 3 15 exactly and was drawn to the boathouse in the back where he would just stare at the boathouse. I know but yeah, that's what I would do.
SPEAKER_01I mean nothing interesting going on at 3 15 in the morning, so why not?
SPEAKER_00In a fucking boathouse. George had stopped going into work, making it difficult for employees to make decisions or hire new clients, but uh he just was like, I'm I'm out. He also had become obsessed with making fires in the fireplace and checking the oil furnace in the basement because no matter what the thermostat said, he could never get warm. Uh one morning Kathy was in the kitchen making a Christmas list, because this is like you know, November before Christmas or a week before Christmas. No, November was when the murders happened. They moved in like right before Christmas. Sorry. Uh one of the kids called for her in a panic from upstairs, and when she got there, she saw all three kids looking in the toilet. The day before, Kathy had scrubbed all the bathrooms in the house, but the inside of this toilet was completely black. She tried flushing it, but the black remained. She told Danny to go get the Clorox from her bathroom, and she said she figured oil had backed up into the water line. Like, girl, what? Okay. Are you sitting on a oil gold mine? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like it's an oil mine. I know. I don't know if it's I don't think it's a mine. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know where oil comes. I just put it in my car. Then Danny called out from her bathroom. The master bathroom's toilet was also black and had a rancid smell, but the hallway outside the room smelled like really sweet perfume. Kathy called for George, who went to the sewing room to open the windows to get rid of the smells, and he saw that the window facing the Amityville River was covered in flies. Gross. It was winter, so they had no idea where the flies had come from or how they survived the cold. Um, by the time George got rid of the flies, the odors had completely just disappeared. This is so this next part's so strange. Later that day, a man knocked on the door holding a six-pack of beer saying that, quote, everyone wants to come over to welcome you to the neighborhood. The man was wearing what looked to be blue collar clothes and boots, and George thought he didn't look like a rich neighbor. Eat eat the rich. What the fuck is that, George? Yeah. George took him into the kitchen to introduce him to Kathy. He told Kathy the same thing that everyone wanted to welcome him. Um told them that he keeps his boat at a neighbor's boathouse, and then holding on to his six pack of beer, said, Quote, I brought it, I'll take it with me, and left.
SPEAKER_01That's quite the housewarming.
SPEAKER_00They never saw him again.
SPEAKER_01Never?
SPEAKER_00They never even got his name.
SPEAKER_01So he just appears with a gift, tells him tells them that everybody wants to welcome them, and then just leaves with his beer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Which is a real party foul, in my opinion. So if you bring liquor or beer to someone's house, it's it fucking stays the way. It's the house drinks now. Yeah. It's the it's the house's out alcohol now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Except like when I was younger, that was like, no, I wasn't gonna I was I obviously like didn't have money when I was younger, and chances are I wasn't able to buy it on my own because I wasn't 21.
SPEAKER_00So Well, that even when I was in my early 20s, I was not buying my own liquor. That's what we had boys for. That's true. I never paid for shit. Uh when George woke up at 3 15 that morning, the front door was open and off the hinge, dad would freak the fuck out.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, he would instantly blame us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he would not be scared, he would be pissed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. What the hell? Can't have anything nice when you have kids. He would probably blame it on like Matt. Oh, yeah, he'd blame it on one of our friends for sure.
SPEAKER_00To be fair, anyone who like gets a door off a hinge, it's probably a teenage boy. True. In the morning, George noticed that the metal facing for the hinge was bent back, meaning whoever did it did it from the inside.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so definitely I would have thought one of the kids.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Kathy went to check on the kids who were all sleeping peacefully in their beds on their stomachs because they're haunted. Oh, that's creepy. Later that day, Kathy was putting up wallpaper in the closets. Uh she got to her closet and was overwhelmed with a sour smell. Um she looked at the crucifix she'd hung up in the closet from the first day they moved in, and it was upside down. I knew it. On Christmas Eve, George woke up at 3 15 in the morning and noticed his wife sleeping on her stomach and went on his nightly jaunt to check on the boathouse because you know those things tend to just float away. Right. We gotta make sure it's okay. Yeah, I gotta go check on the boathouse. That is such a dad thing to do though. Like, I gotta go check on the boathouse.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I could see your husband doing that.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, you 'cause he's a freak of nature. When he got to the fence of the yard, the dog Harry woke up and barked, and he turned to quiet Harry, and he looked up at Missy's bedroom window to see Missy awake and staring at him. But behind her he saw the face of a pig. What the animal, not a cop, with glowing red eyes. George ran back into the house to check on his daughter to see her sleeping on her stomach, but did notice that the rocking chair in front of her window was rocking back and forth. What the fuck?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I definitely I definitely would be like getting my kid out of there. There's something about a pig. I know. They're creepier to me than goats. Like, you know how they always say like goats are goats are scary because their eyes are like slit sideways or whatever. They're a rectangle. Okay, but also like when it comes to hauntings, like pigs are probably the scariest animal to me. And then goats.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think a pig would scare me more than a goat. Yeah. Have you ever seen a goat in real life though? Yeah. Creepy as fuck. I just don't think they're that creepy. And their eyes are like bulging out of our tiny little heads.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I think they're kind of cute in like an ugly way.
SPEAKER_00No, they're not. Okay. This is like Jarvis the raccoon. His name is Jimothy. Jimothy. Who the fuck cares? He's creepy as fuck. Whatever. I love Jimothy. Turns out Missy actually talked to this pig spirit, and his name was Jody. She referred to him as her friend. The next day, Kathy heard Missy talking to someone in her room, and she could hear someone answering Missy. And when Kathy went into her room, Missy was alone and facing the rocking chair. Ugh. Time to commit the child. I would kick that child out. The first day they moved into the house, they had a priest come bless it. Father Ralph Peccararo. While he was blessing the room that would be Kathy's sewing room, he heard a loud voice say, Get out. That was bad. Let me try that again. Get out. Oh, that was a good one. Thank you. Behind him and got slapped in the face. As your husband would say. Can you imagine filming a ghost and haunting you? Like if you didn't know him. It would be the most random shit. Oh my god, you would be anxious constantly. And it would just, it would he talks like Boom Hour from King of the Hill. So you'd just be like, what the f this is no one. Uh a day later the priest became suddenly ill with a fever of 103 to 104. My man go to the doctor. For sure. But he couldn't get the sewing room out of his head. So on Christmas Eve, he called the letz's to tell George not to let anyone go in the room. Halfway through the conversation the phone stopped working. Uh and the next day the priest suddenly felt a hundred percent better. To which he was probably like, thank God, because the church doesn't provide health insurance. I actually don't know if that's true. I would assume. I would assume they probably do. Maybe not then. But the same day George became violently ill, and even though he had the runs, he checked the house that night to make sure everything was locked and secured and went to bed where Kathy was like, eh, good looking. Listen, before they moved in, they had sex at least once a night. Kathy said, Get a girl I don't cook, I don't clean, but let me tell you how I got this ring. Um but since they'd moved into this literal hellhole, they had barely touched each other. After they finished going heals to Jesus, Kathy fell asleep and had a dream that Luis DeFeo was going to pound town with a man. Kathy said she just knew it wasn't Luis's husband. Later, Ronald's defense attorney would tell Kathy that Luis was in fact jeeping behind Ronald Sr.'s back. Oh. Yeah. Also the DeFeos had wall-length mirrors from floor to ceiling across their bed, which is honestly such a flex. We have sex so good, even we need to see it.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah. That's legit. Our parents had mirrors on their ceilings. Okay, but we moved into the house with the mirrors on the ceiling.
SPEAKER_00I know, but there was a reason that was their room. Check this. One day Kathy was filling a closet in the basement with canned goods. She was really excited because it was like a makeshift pantry, which as an adult with two children, I understand. She put a box of cans on a shelf in the closet and the shelf started to crack. When she moved the box, she noticed the wall in the back of the closet was loose. She called George downstairs where he took off the shelves and pushed the wall in. Behind this wall was a four by five foot red brick room.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, that's like a little prison.
SPEAKER_00Fuck that. They figured it was probably a bomb shelter, but they said it wasn't on the plans they received from the broker.
SPEAKER_01Well, if it was a bomb shelter. Or wouldn't all four walls be brick?
SPEAKER_00I guess, yeah, one wall would be the wood. Yeah. Yeah, good point. George told Kathy the room smelled like blood. This is the point in the plot where you move the fuck out. By this time, no one in the house could ignore that shit was haunted. George started doing research on this history of the property. He found newspaper articles from where the murders and trial took place, obviously. And one article he found that the coroner indicated that the time of death for the DeFeos was through fifteen AM. Oh my god. The same time of morning that George was waking up every day. He went next to the Amityville Historical Society and found history of the land. Apparently, the Shinnecock Indian nation used the land to quarantine the sick and dying. They were put in cages until they died of exposure.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, that's awful.
SPEAKER_00Uh the Shinnecocks were convinced the land possessed demons. To be clear, members of the surviving Shinnecock tribe today say this claim is not accurate, and I I am in no way saying it's true, but this is what George told the author of Amityville Horror, Jay Anson. After white settlers stole the land from the Shinnnecocks and forced them out, it's said that John Ketchum lived 500 feet from where the Amityville house is now, and he was kicked out of Salem for doing witchcraft and is said to have practiced witchcraft on the land. I don't think men should be allowed to practice witchcraft.
SPEAKER_01Interesting that he wasn't killed for it.
SPEAKER_00Isn't it? Yeah. He just got ran out of town. Yeah. Also, that's a woman thing. Can we have one fucking thing? Right. I j also, there's just something about m a man, you're just not you're not witchy enough.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel like there's something about like being a witch is like a woman's intuition.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's a feminine energy.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00So fuck off, John Ketchum. On New Year's Eve, the family was celebrating in the living room watching the countdown on TV. The kids had already fallen asleep, and Kathy was sitting in a chair across from George watching the fire he had built because he wouldn't stop fucking building them. Which is also my husband. That would be Oh for sure. The back of the fireplace was entirely black from the obsessive fire building. All of a sudden Kathy saw a white outline start to form against the black brick. The white outline had started to form horns with a white peaked hood and a demon face. Oh my god. It looked as though half its face was blown off. Kathy finally managed to scream as the outline got bigger, and George turned to look at it and saw it too because the figure had been burned into the bricks. Early the next morning they were awakened by a gust of wind in their bedroom. All the windows and doors on the second floor were wide open, with the exception of Missy's room. Kathy went into Missy's room to see where the child was sleeping and noticed the rocking chair moving, as if someone was currently sitting in it. George rushed in to assess the scene. He saw the rocking chair, and when he went up to it it stopped rocking. Kathy brought Missy downstairs with A and George stayed the rest of the morning. George cannot find a plausible reason for the windows and doors being open. It could have been the wind, he said. But why only the second story? Right. Because it wasn't the wind, George. The mental gymnastics you would have to do to convince yourself the wind opened all your windows. In every direction. Yeah. And only on one story.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I guess when you're in that situation, you're you're you don't want to Oh, not me.
SPEAKER_01I jump to ghost every time. A weird noise, that was a ghost. A weird scent, that was a ghost.
SPEAKER_00There are definitely days I I do I feel dizzy and like it was a ghost.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I definitely that wasn't the cat, it was a ghost.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. One day Kathy was sitting in the living room when she saw something move out of the corner of her eye. In the corner of the room was a ceramic lion she brought, she bought George for Christmas. She turned to look at it and swore it had moved two inches toward her. Later that day, George went into the living room to start a fire. Oh my god. George, enough. And Kathy heard him yell from the kitchen. George had fallen and hit his head, and he yelled, Who put this goddamn lion here? Again, Dad would lose his shit. Yep. George moved the lion to the sewing room upstairs. Uh a couple of times Kathy had felt a hand touch her shoulder in the kitchen, followed by that sweet perfume perfume smell again. Kathy at this point was like, fuck this house. One night the lesses had a cozy little evening. They had a nice dinner, sat by the fireplace. Neither Kathy nor George felt depressed or angry. All was good, comfy, cozy. Around ten that night, after the kids were in bed, Kathy turned off the living room light and turned to take George's hand to lead him upstairs because they're kinky fucks. When Kathy turned around, she saw a pair of unblinking red eyes in the window. She screamed. George turned around and saw him too, so he went outside with his flashlight, but no one was there. This is so creepy. He looked down at the snow, and there in the snow, going around the corner of the house, were hoof prints. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00The tracks were still there in the morning and led to the garage door where the door was almost torn off the frame. I can hear Dad now. What the fuck? Again, he would find a way to blame us. For sure. Or our friends. George was on the same page because he was pissed at the money you would have to spend to fix the door. I can hear mom going, Danny. Yeah. While George went into work, Kathy was deep cleaning. Uh she was plumping her bed pillows. I love a good pillow. When suddenly felt a man holding her around the waist, she said it felt like a man and the pressure was increasing. Even in death, men are being inappropriate. She then felt hands around her wrist and felt like two energies were fighting over her. The pressure became so overwhelming she passed out, and when she woke up, the lower half of her body was on the bed and her head was almost on the floor. At the same time, George had stopped at a local bar for a little brewski. He and the bartender started talking about the DeFeos because this was the same bartender that Ronald had told about the murders two years prior or a year prior. George asked the bartender if Ronald had ever mentioned something about the house prior to the night of the murders. Uh trigger warning for animal death. Oh God. The bartender said he didn't ever mention the house, but that the bartender had once hosted a bar in the DeFeos basement for a party. He was storing kegs in the closet when one of the kegs knocked against the back of that wall and the wall opened partially. Uh, and he described that secret red room, and he said he had nightmares about it. The nightmares that people were slaughtering pigs and dogs in that room.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00George was like, God damn it. He called Father Ray to come bless the house again. And the priest said, That's a no for me, big dog. But at the same time this was all happening, the father was really going through it. He had the the original flu um and recovered and then got the flu again. His hands started to blister on top and in his palms. The pain was so bad he couldn't sleep and had to wear gloves. So we decided to do what is called the votive mass, which allows mass for a specific reason, like a sick person or for peace. Um I didn't know like mass like M-A-S-S. Yes, like Catholic Mass. I don't really I'm I don't know anything about Catholicism, really. Uh so I don't really know Mass can be only be held on like certain occasions. Yeah, I don't know anything about it. He blessed the family from the church because he wasn't about to go back in the house. The demon was literally like, get the fuck out, and he said, No problem. Yeah, he said, I that's fine. I can do that. That's I'll see you later. Uh not really. He went back to his room after the votive mess and it smelled like human shit. Ew. Father Ray remembered from his teachings about demonology that this odor was a sign of the devil, which I just hear Bobby Boucher's mom. It's the devil! At the same time, George was in the basement doing some mantour when he smelled something weird. He opened the wall to the secret room, and when he opened it, he was overwhelmed to this sense of human shit. Oh my god. This would not make me think my house was haunted, but I also have a toddler. Just another week at the leg house. My house doesn't smell like human shit, but I have found human shit. So do with that what you will. Oh, kids, they're just great, aren't they? It's amazing. It's a journey. Uh that night George and Kathy were walking into the living room when Kathy screamed, because she's always fucking screaming. Sitting next to George's chair was the lion statue. I is the demon a Leo?
SPEAKER_01Um, and you know, I could see most demons being Leos. Like, I need attention, see, I'm feeling. Oh my god. I feel like maybe all of them are. You're right. Maybe.
SPEAKER_00Are you a demon?
SPEAKER_01Not yet. I'm still alive.
SPEAKER_00Uh Kathy was like, yeah, we need to leave. But George convinced her to stay. I okay. Why? I he had sunk so much time and money into the house that he was like a sunk cost fallacy. So they went to bed where George tossed and turned, and at some point he heard what he thought sounded like marching band music in the living room. He sounded he said it sounded like fifty musicians marching around the first floor. Jesus. He went downstairs, but as soon as he got there, it stopped and nothing was there. Suddenly he realized he had left Kathy alone upstairs and raced back to their room. When he opened the door, Kathy was floating two feet above their bed. George pulled her back down and they both fell to the floor. And when Kathy woke up, she asked why they were on the floor, and George said she had a bad dream and fell out of bed. That's a man who loves his wife because the way I would tell my husband you were fucking floating in the fucking air. And were moving? Yeah. I could never keep that information to be.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I could never know. I would be like, if I'm traumatized by this, you're traumatized. I'm not keeping it from you.
SPEAKER_00It's not my job to protect you.
SPEAKER_01It's your job to protect me. But at the same time, like, would I want to know that I was floating? I would not. I don't think I would.
SPEAKER_00Uh the next night the band came back and George's pissed. He had been outside checking on the dog when he heard it. As soon as he could see the living room, the sound stopped, except every piece of furniture in the living room was moved.
SPEAKER_01See, I'd be pissed too, because now somebody's having a party without me, and I'm like explicitly not invited.
SPEAKER_00That is Leo energy. Yeah, well, George worked with a guy named Eric who told George that his girlfriend Francine was a medium and communic could communicate with spirits. George told her what was happening in the house and asked if she would come take a gander. She agreed and said she would come over in the next day or two. She also told George to look for an abandoned well on the property because she thinks that is where the spirits are coming from.
SPEAKER_01Most likely.
SPEAKER_00This fucked George up because earlier that day he found an old well covered up in the basement.
SPEAKER_01In the basement? It wasn't even on the it was in the house. Yeah. Oh fuck.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yeah. Around 2 a.m. that day, George was lying in bed awake, waiting for the marching band. Because he wasn't about to miss the party. He rolled over to check on Kathy to find her levitating two feet above the bed. Again. Yeah. Also, though, men are so unobservant. What do you mean you didn't notice her start floating two feet above the goddamn bed?
SPEAKER_01You didn't notice like a shift in the in the weight of the bed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh he yanked her back down but didn't see his wife. He saw an old haggard lady with crazy gray hair, scars all over her face, and drool hanging from a toothless mouth. Fuck me up.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, no. I don't think I could ever look at Phil again if I saw that.
SPEAKER_00No. George was like, get away from me, freak. Uh Kathy came too and went to check her reflection, and she too saw what looked like a scary old woman. A second later, she returned to normal, but the scars didn't disappear until the next morning. Uh which I don't even I can't I would be upset. Oh, me too. I'm really vain though, so uh Francine and her boyfriend Kifa just kidding her boyfriend Eric came over that evening. Francine sends two spirits right away, an old man and an old woman that lived in the house at some point but didn't die in the house. She asked Kathy, Do you smell her perfumed? Which Kathy said she did. In the basement, she said that someone was buried under the closet and touching the back wall. She said, While she was touching the back wall, she said, This seems like a new part, like a new part has been added on and over his grave. Standing outside the sewing room, she said, You've been having problems in here. She went inside and went into a trance. A masculine voice left her body and said, This is a long quote, I would like to make one suggestion to you. Most people find out their spirits uh who their spirits are, and they find they like them. They don't want them to get lost or to go away. But in this case, I feel this house should be cleared and exercised. Somebody's little girl and boys, I see bloodstains. Somebody hurt themselves badly here. Somebody tried to kill themselves or something. George recognized the voice, but he couldn't place it. And Francine said, Okay, peace out, Girl Scout. Oh wow, okay. Yeah. After she left, and everyone was in bed, George went upstairs and found the entire banister for the staircase wrenched from the floor. I cannot emphasize enough how unhinged this would make our dad. He would blow a fucking casket the way that man hates a house project.
SPEAKER_01Am I right? Dude, this house would be dad's nightmare and not because of the demons or ghosts or pigs.
SPEAKER_00Fuck no. He would be like the way that he would be so mad and constantly having to fix things. Yes. I mean, we saw it. Yeah. There was no demon. Yeah. But when George saw the banister, he suddenly recalled whose voice was coming out of Francine. It was Father Ray.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I knew it. I knew it.
SPEAKER_00Oh. The next night, Kathy's brother Jimmy and his new wife Carrie were staying over. They were staying in Missy's room, which like six-bedroom house, and they have to stay in the daughter's room.
SPEAKER_01Especially the daughter's room where there's like a pig and a rocking chair rocking. Yeah, if you put me in the pig room, here's our most haunted room.
SPEAKER_00I'm so fucking mad at you. Uh well, Missy slept on a couch in a room down the hall. Uh George George woke up at 3 15, heard Carrie screaming from Missy's room, and when he went to go check on her, he turned on the light. And Carrie was in a state saying there was a little boy at the end of the bed touching her foot. Oh my god. She said he looked very sick and was saying, Help me. He also asked Carrie where Missy and Jody were. The boy ghost didn't. Yeah, George. Kathy went and got her crucifix and was like, We're blessing this bitch. The house, not Carrie. While they were blessing the living room, they heard loud voices saying, Will you stop? Oh, this is a Leo. They are a Leo. The next morning, George was on the phone when he heard Kathy scream from the third floor. He ran up to see what was making her scream again. And in the hallway he saw what looked like green jello seeping from the walls and pooling on the floor.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so like that's like is that like ectoplasm?
SPEAKER_00The devil's jello. Oh.
SPEAKER_01But does ectoplasm exist or is that just Ghostbusters? No, that's like a real thing. Except I think it like comes out of the body of something. I don't think it just like comes out of the walls, but it's a real thing. Oh. I mean, I I supposedly I don't I've never seen it myself. Yeah, I wouldn't want to.
SPEAKER_00The next morning, Kathy called her mom Joan, saying she needed her immediately. When Joan got to the house, George led her upstairs to the master room. Kathy was lying on the bed with her robe open, her breasts and stomach exposed. And Joan saw it starting from the top of Kathy's pubic bone. I wrote public bone, but it's pubic bone. And leading up to the bottom of her breast were giant red welts. Ooh. When Joan touched the welts, they burned her fingers. And Kathy told her that George had them as well. Uh George didn't want to tell Joan what was happening because Joan was very Catholic and he knew that she would tell him that the family had to leave. But yeah. But George Joan was already suspicious. She never felt comfortable in that house, and now her daughter and son-in-law were covered in giant red welts that weren't explainable. When George did the dumbest shit I've ever heard of in my life. Oh god. I mean, that's fine. But in the book, he found the names of demons and an incantation that would call demons to earth. He called Father Ray and was like, listen to all these demon names. To which the priest said, What in the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you reading these out loud? And then the phone went dead. Um I cannot emphasize this enough. Please do not call me and start saying demon names out loud.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00I will block you.
SPEAKER_01For sure.
SPEAKER_00Our mother could call me from heaven. And if she started saying the names of demons, I would say, Bitch, what the fuck? Yeah. And I would block her. Spirit. From heaven. Yes. That night there was a thunderstorm and Kathy asked her son Danny to go shut her window in her room. A few seconds later, they heard Danny scream in pain. I'm this is it's not funny. His fingers had been shut in the window, and George couldn't get the window to lift up. It finally shot up a few inches by itself, and Danny went to his mother for comfort. Uh he was crying and his hand was in a fist. When she finally got him to let go, all his fingers, with the exception of his thumb, were completely flat. What? Yeah. George lost it and went full Zack Baggins on the house. Okay. Telling the spirits to come out and fight. Love me some Zack. Uh such masculine energy. Just like I'm gonna fight him. He finally stopped having a tantrum long enough to drive Danny to the hospital. The medical intern found that although Danny's fingers were completely flat from the cuticle to the second knuckle, no bones were broken and no cartilage was injured. And the intern was like, here's a bandage and some baby aspirin.
SPEAKER_01I would love to see those x-rays.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, also.
SPEAKER_01Some baby aspirin.
SPEAKER_00Get a real fucking doctor in here. When George woke up the next morning, every window and door in the house was open again with some of the window frames whipped off. Jesus. And some locks to the doors and windows were completely warped. Because it had rained all night, the entire house was soaked with water. They were actually planning on leaving this night, but they had to stay to get all the water damage under control. Uh that night they all slept in the master bedroom. George had a nightmare. He was screaming, and he was screaming in his sleep. He woke up the family with his screams, um, and the family woke George up. Missy said she was going to her room to see Jody. George asked Kathy who's Jody? And Kathy said it was Missy's imaginary friend. Missy said, he's not imaginary. I see him all the time. He's the biggest pig you've ever seen. George and Kathy said, Oh fuck and ran to Missy's room. Missy was in her bed when George asked where Jody was, and she said that he would be right back. He had to go outside. Then she said, Oh, he's right there, and pointed to the window. George again saw red beady eyes outside the second story window, felt Kathy run past him and smash the window with a chair.
SPEAKER_01Well now what's that gonna do? I right him in easier.
SPEAKER_00Well, the eyes disappeared, and they could hear a pig squealing and running away.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so maybe she did something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but also don't do that, Jody. Don't fucking squeal at me. Right.
SPEAKER_01Not after you've been like shot the fuck up. Haunting my house.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And my kid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh the next afternoon, George had to go into the office because the tax man was coming. Uh while eating lunch with Missy. A Kathy asked her about Jody again. She reported that sometimes Jody was as small as a teddy bear and sometimes as large as the house. Jesus a big pig. Missy said that Jody told her he was an angel and that there was a little boy who used to live in her room who got ill and died. She told Kathy that Jody told her that Missy would live in the house forever so she could stay and play with the boy. Um I don't I if my kid said that I would boot him out of the house. Yeah. Apparently, demonic entities will appear to children as something non-threatening to appeal to them and earn their trust. A pig is threatening. I'm not sure. A two-story tall pig is non-threatening. Right. After this little conversation, Kathy was ready to head on out. She packed some shit and Missy her and Missy's coats were on when George got home from picking up the boys from school. Uh but just then Kathy forgot that she had called a window repair man to come repair Missy's window after she threw a chair at a pig. Um and he was pulling up in the driveway. So they had To stay until the man left, but by the time he was done, it was dinner time. And they were like, I'm not sure. Got just any excuse to stay in this house, I guess. And honestly, after George fell asleep that night, he had a nightmare that a big black shadow was at Chris's bed and was enveloping him. George was in the master bedroom in his dream, but could see through the floor to the third floor and into the boys' room. George was screaming in his sleep, it's got Chris, it's got Chris. Kathy woke him, shook him awake, and George told her what he saw. But that's when Chris told his parents that in the night he had to use the bathroom, but the door to the master bedroom or the master bathroom was locked, so he went upstairs. When he got to the third floor hallway, he looked down and could see through the floor and saw George having his nightmare.
SPEAKER_01What the fuck?
SPEAKER_00That's some weird shit. Yeah. George was finally like, okay, we're done.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's what called it for him? I I think the not the beady red eyes, not the pig. I think it'd be the jello. Not the marching band. Yeah. Not the hooves in the snow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I actually, yeah. I think the hooves in the snow.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I think the red beady eyes and the pig that I saw in the window would be enough for me at that that first time. I think I would be done.
SPEAKER_00Just take a big financial hit. You're yeah. The family made arrangement arrangements to go to Kathy's mom's house. Uh they all got in the car and the car wouldn't start. George got out to check under the hood when all of a sudden lightning struck behind the garage. Thunder roared. The wind slammed the hood of the van shut, and it started pissing rain. George ran for the house, unlocked the door, and told his family to come back inside. Uh they were trapped. George Call a cab. For real. George thought it won't let us leave. Cabs are here. Right. Uh Kathy had fallen asleep at the kitchen table around eight, so George carried her and Missy upstairs to the master bedroom. This part is very creepy. The boys went to bed shortly after George sat in bed awake, ready for anything at this point. At some point in the night, Kathy rose from bed, stared at herself in the sex mirrors, and then tried to walk out the bedroom door. George started calling for her, but she was in a trance. Before she could get out the door, she closed her eyes and fell to the floor. George put her back in bed. The dog Harry was tied up in the doorway. He started to gag and threw up on the floor. Then George heard a noise above his head. The beds in the boys' room were moving back and forth across the floor. Then the dresser drawers in his room started to open and shut on their own. He started to hear voices coming from the living room. He couldn't hear what was being said, but it sounded like a party of people. Then the marching band was back. But by this time he could hear the music start coming up the stairs. Oh George thrashed around but couldn't get out of bed, which he now realized was soaking wet. George felt someone get on the bed but couldn't see anything. He then felt this person begin to step on his chest. But he realized that they didn't feel like feet. They felt like hooves. Oh my god. The next thing he knew it was morning and the boys were shaking him awake. They said something was in their room and a monster had tried to grab them, and their beds were levitating and banging into the ceiling. Uh suddenly Harry started to bark at something coming up the stairs. His tail was between his legs and he was off his leash by now, but he wouldn't move. George managed to get out of bed and go into the hallway. There. At the top of the stairs. At the end of the hallway, George saw a giant white, hooded figure with a blown off face pointing at him. It was the same white figure Kathy had seen in the fireplace. George told Danny to take Missy outside. He grabbed Kathy and ran after the kids. The front door was open and off the hinges. The family and Harry packed in the van, and this time it started. George said, Hold your ass, Fred. Hauled ass out of there to his mother-in-law's. While they were driving, they could hear banging on the van, and the van would randomly lose control and swerve. His plan was to stay there until an investigation could be done to see if anything could be solved. They had a nice night at his mother-in-law's, they had dinner, relented all that happened. They felt better. That night though, George suddenly felt he was dreaming that he was floating. He heard Kathy calling his name below him. He felt himself hit the bed and he realized he wasn't dreaming. He was levitating. Kathy pulled him out of the room, but when they got to the stairs, they both saw a green black slime climbing up the stairs. Oh my god. When you start defying gravity, that's when a problem starts. Oh yeah. George realized that whatever haunted their once dream home was now following them, which has to feel incredibly hopeless. Right. In February 1976, they appeared on the news with Ronald DeFeo's defense attorney, uh, William Weber, to talk about what happened to them in the house. George was convinced that whatever happened to the DeFeos was influenced by whatever was in the house. But after the story came out, a reporter from Channel 5 News asked to investigate, and the letzs agreed. The reporter that wanted to investigate contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren. For those that don't know, Ed Warren is a demonologist and his wife Lorraine called herself a medium. Um it should be said the Warrens didn't ask for any money except for gas and tolls. But there are stories told that the Warrens say and do anything um to kind of get like medium. Yeah. So take with that what you will. February 24th, 1976, the Channel 5 crew and the Warrens start the investigation. To be honest, like nothing really comes of this investigation. Um they do some seances, people get sick. Uh the like nothing really crazy happens. At one point, Lorraine goes into the sewing room and she says, Um, I hope this is c as close to hell as I'll ever get. And you can just like see her. I say what you will. She's the most adorable old lady. For sure. Um and I can just like hear her saying that. Yeah. They told the letters that they couldn't help them. So Oh, that's cool. Fuck you, why am I? Yeah. Another investigation was held in April by a guy named Hans Holzer. The medium with Hans told him that the house was built on a burial ground. And Hans says in an interview that a skull of a young boy washed up one day, and that's when the activity started in the house. Uh, but nothing incredible has ever reported the same thing. George and Kathy never went back into the house. They left all their belongings, signed to the house away to the bank, and moved to California. No one else that has ever lived in the house ever reported any haunting or anything weird at all happening. George believes that the blessing that was performed on the house is what sparked the spirit to haunt them, which could explain why no one else experienced anything, I guess. What is your cat doing? He's so dumb. He's adorable. He's just whatever. George kept a little bit of a secret. According to some sources, George had a history of dabbling in the occult and was known to recite the names of demons while meditating.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. So he's like getting on a whole spiritual level and then reciting the names of these demons on on another plane. Yeah. Wow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's a whole new again. The occult is for women only. And this is why. This is fucking why. George and Kathy never recanted their story, uh, even after divorcing in 1988, and both passed a polygraph test they took. Uh Kathy passed away in 2004, and George passed two years later. Kathy's son Danny, your cat. Kathy's son Danny was has done interviews corroborating everything that happened, while her other son, Chris, says it was sensationalized. So, Ashley, what do you think? Was Amityville real? Or were the Lutzes hanging out on Front Street for money?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so there's something to be said about the fact that they purchased this home and it was what, $30,000, $40,000 above their original budget, which today would be like astronomical. So there is something to be said about that. But they hadn't, I can't imagine they'd even made their first mortgage payment to really see the dent that this mortgage payment was going to be making in their finances for them to be like, uh, oh, we gotta get out of here. And also it started so soon. Like, why would you go through the purchasing of a property just for like day one for you to start trying to get out of it?
SPEAKER_00Well, that and they gave the house back to the bank. So it's not like if anything, that did damage to their credit. Right. They just lost m money on the whole thing. And you're right, they they hadn't even been there long enough to make their first mortgage payment, so they didn't even know like what kind of you know, like debt they would be in everyone.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah. And also just the fact that like the kids were seeing things and that the chair, like the little kids saw the chair rocking and the pig. It just and then like the hooves in the yard. I don't know. It's I feel like sometimes a property can have a haunting in it, and they haunt a family, and then it's like I feel like you they don't keep doing it for every family that lives there. I I feel like sometimes they're kind of like, okay, that was enough, or more than likely they follow the family. So yeah, Amityville, that house isn't haunted anymore because the family is now haunted, that they stuck with the family.
SPEAKER_00Um, I think that's a plausible theory. Also, the uh it could be a case of like a haunted person, like George for sure, doing that crazy shit. And then I think there's also something to be said about like energies coexisting um for whatever reason, right? Like maybe no one else like put any credence behind it, right? Like if you don't believe in it, it's not really gonna happen to you.
SPEAKER_01Right. Um, so you're gonna find a logical explanation for every single thing that's happening to you if you don't believe in it.
SPEAKER_00Right. And if you're not scared, you're not like ramping up that energy, it's not gonna get worse. No. Uh so I think I think the majority of this I tend to believe um the jello is difficult for me to wrap my head around. Yeah. Um, but things levitating, things moving, kids getting fucked up, uh, I can believe that. The doors and the windows, like I can those are believable to me. But yeah, I think the same thing. I think that they were haunted.
SPEAKER_01Right. It just doesn't make sense to me that they like purchase this house and then the next day they're like, oh fuck, what did we do? Let's instead of like trying to sell it, let's just make out this make up this outlandish story about demons and hauntings and blood rooms and pigs. Like I that doesn't make any sense to me. I can't imagine that they do it for the what's the word I'm looking for? For the clout, because I don't I don't when in history has somebody ever like uh been haunted and had a good experience with the media after that.
SPEAKER_00For sure. There's a rumor that the defense attorney for Ronald Jr. um not the defense attorney, I'm sorry, the author, I can't remember, someone and the Letzes got together one night and got wasted and came up with this story to sell because of the history of the house. Um so I I think that anyone will say anything if something isn't believable to them. Right? Like I think people will make things up because they're scared or because they don't believe in it or whatever, and the rumor mill is a thing.
SPEAKER_01And see, I don't know if I buy that rumor just because again, like that's a big investment to like purchase a home that's above your budget, to then just be like, let's make up a whole story about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it's not, I mean, I don't know for sure that I know like now if you come up with a st if Amityville happened today, like yes, the people that experienced that would be rolling in the dough because of social media and all of the attention that they'd be getting. But I just don't think that that was the case in the 70s. I have no idea I wasn't alive in the 70s. I don't know, but it doesn't seem like that's something that would be a plan. Like I'm gonna go in and make this whole story up and make a ton of money off of it. And I mean, maybe I really have no idea, but I just feel like it's so much more work than than what you would get out of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree with that. Uh, so we're gonna do this thing at the end of every episode. It's a little segment called The First Thing I Will Do When I Die. The idea is that you get to go to heaven and um do whatever you want. So, what's the first thing you'll do when you die?
SPEAKER_01I think the first thing I'll do when I die is go find my old cat Rooster. Wow. What? You'd find Rooster before you find mom? Look, mom, mom would understand. They're probably together. I just need to make sure my baby is still okay.
SPEAKER_00I know, I just love that. Mom's probably like, okay. Um I think the first thing I'll do when I die is find mom and say, what the fuck was that? What the fuck was that?
SPEAKER_01Like, just died? Yeah. Left me there? Look, she left you with me and dad. It's not like she left you alone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but then I'd find grandma and uncle Steve and we'd get knee walking drunk. Oh yeah. And smoking cigarettes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. I think so. And then I think after finding mom, I'd have to explain myself for all of the things that she found out about. Oh no. Yeah. I haven't even thought about it. Yeah. All the things that she knows now. I hate that. Yep. But grandma will be there and she'll be on our side, so that's all that matters.
SPEAKER_00Yes, like a true grandma.
SPEAKER_01She's always on our side. Yep. That wraps up this week's episode. Thanks for hanging out with us, and we hope that you were just as stressed out as we were. If you survived tonight's episode, make sure to rate, follow, and share the podcast with your haunted BFFs.
